After fulfilling a dream of playing in the NFL, Van Hiles focused his attention on his passion for engineering and design. While traveling the country as a consultant, working for OEMs as well as product development firms, Van realized there was a void in the design process. The inability of the engineer to execute the design intent established by the Industrial Designer created inefficiencies. With his extensive experience in developing aesthetic surfaces and his strong engineering background, Van was able to successfully fill that void with Hiles Design Inc.
After years of assisting companies in bringing innovative products to the marketplace, Van was featured in the Designs for Life exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. The Designs for Life exhibit introduced contemporary African-American industrial designers who successfully merged science and style to address consumer needs. From sofas to solar panels, their products make life easier, safer and better. Van was the only engineer recognized among the 49 designers chosen for the exhibit, which is a testament to his eye for design.
HDI has broadened its scope to become an engineering and product development firm after nearly a decade primarily focusing on the engineering side of product development. During Van’s time as a consultant, he has had the opportunity of working with some of the most creative and intelligent people in the product development field. As a result, HDI has assembled a team of like-minded independent practitioners to offer a full spectrum of creative services.
HDI operates on a "Hollywood Model" that involves only high level talent. With partners in a variety of specialties ranging from strategy and research through design, engineering and sourcing; we can offer a full spectrum of capability customized to suit our clients’ needs. We build teams, or allocate individuals based on the needs of our clients.
Ours is a lean approach that limits overhead, but doesn't compromise on service or expertise. Often, with a traditional consulting firm, you are sold the "A" team at the outset while the interns churn out your work. Or, you may have a working history with a firm, only to have the talent turn over at a dizzying rate. Our dynamic model is most stable over time because our partners are fully invested in their own futures, ensuring an unparalleled pride in ownership of every project.
The HDI distinct advantage:
-
Experience and Creativity - You work solely with motivated, independent professionals; not junior designers or interns.
-
Greater customer service and responsiveness – You’ll maintain direct contact with actual engineers and the design team focusing on your project.
-
Competitive Cost – Your costs are not driven up by high overhead or inflated by an excessive management structure.
